The Lynchburg Film Institute is a nonprofit organization working to strengthen and develop our regional filmmaking community. Through year-round programming, we offer local filmmakers the chance to connect, collaborate, learn, and grow. Our resources include educational opportunities, a curated film series, special screenings, guest speakers, and networking events for both filmmakers and film enthusiasts. As a cornerstone of the Lynchburg Film Festival, we celebrate independent filmmaking and showcase emerging filmmakers from around the world each October at the Academy Center of the Arts.
Whether you're an aspiring filmmaker or a casual movie fan, join us as we continue to enrich Lynchburg's cultural landscape through the art of film.
PROGRAMS
Guest Speakers
We host a variety of guest speakers, including filmmakers, industry professionals, and experts, who share insights about the filmmaking process and industry trends. After each screening, attendees have the chance to engage directly with these speakers during Q&A sessions.
Special Film Screenings
We curate a selection of unique and independent films for special screenings that bring new cinematic experiences to Lynchburg. These films fall outside the mainstream movie circuit and give our community the opportunity to explore thought-provoking storytelling from around the world.
Filmmaking Workshops
These hands-on workshops provide filmmakers and aspiring creatives with the tools and knowledge they need to hone their craft. From writing and directing to cinematography and editing, these workshops are designed to inspire and elevate local talent.
Discussion Panels
Our discussion panels feature conversations on various film-related topics, including themes, genres, filmmaking techniques, and cultural impacts. These panels are deep dives into the art of cinema and encourage lively conversation among filmmakers, film lovers, and the general public.
Filmmaker Camp
Our summer camp offers a creative and educational experience for teenagers interested in filmmaking. Participants learn the basics of film production, from scriptwriting to shooting and editing, and work together to create a short film by the end of camp.
Lynchburg Film Festival
Our flagship event, the Lynchburg Film Festival, takes place every October. This event celebrates the best in independent cinema, showcasing local and international films with screenings, networking opportunities, and special guests.
